Fashion in film: the best designer and director collaborations - Vogue Australia Posted: 22 Feb 2019 12:00 AM PST Fashion and film have been inextricably linked for the past century, with designers drawing inspiration from the silver screen and auteurs going to great lengths to secure the perfect costumes for their characters. Would Holly Golightly (above) have become a pop culture sensation without Hubert de Givenchy's sophisticated designs? And what would God Created Woman be without Balmain or Barbarella without Paco Rabanne? Below, Vogue presents 10 of the best designer and director collaborations of all time. Karl Lagerfeld’s best moments in Vogue Australia from the last 10 years - Vogue Australia Posted: 20 Feb 2019 12:00 AM PST Advertisement What is an image? Karl Lagerfeld knew his way around one better than any in the business and so it is that his image-making might be the reason we will never forget him. Not only did he create clothing (he preferred not to think of himself just as a designer), but he built the scaffolding through which we will forever view his tweeds, his tulle, his Lesage-embroidered gowns. He was practiced behind the camera, in both still and moving image. He loved film, and it filtered into his interpretation of women and their mood. He extended clothing's reach through immersive worlds. Through his experiential shows, he led the way in an area that so many brands seem to breathlessly evoke now: 'experience'. Taking the Chanel caravan on tour every season, the others began riding in the slip stream. It all means that when we see his clothes, we think immediately of, not only the sublime beading, the expertly crafted leather and fanciful flounces of feathers, but the worlds they might belong to. A Lagerfeld image is an experience, with the woman fronting up to the here-and-now with grace, optimism and style. We take a look back at his creations in the pages of Vogue Australia, demonstrating his skill at doing, as he once said, not what Coco Chanel has done but what she would have. Vogue’s best dressed of 2018 - Vogue Australia Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:00 AM PST In red carpet terms, 2018 was a big one with the #Metoo movement sweeping across the Golden Globes (turning the first official carpet of the year black) to the Grammys and the BAFTAs. Aside from the political slant to this year's biggest and brightest red carpets, there were some seriously memorable moments thanks to the 2018 Met Gala theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, where we saw Rihanna take on The Pope and Katy Perry go full archangel on us. Both deserve honorary mentions here for their efforts on that night in May. But our 2018 list isn't for the headline-grabbers; it's a list filled with women (and one man, Donald Glover) who gave us unexpected red carpet gold. We're championing the quiet achievers who turned up and out in gowns that had us doing a double take or were, quite simply, breath-taking. New names on 2018's list include Yara Shahidi, Sarah Paulson and Laura Harrier, who impressed us consistently throughout the year in the likes of Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton. Regulars like Cate Blanchett and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley reappeared thanks to their unfailing ability to push the envelope. However, one could argue that this year's standout, a true dark horse that always inspires but truly owned the red carpet in 2018 – blowing everyone else out of the park – was Lady Gaga. On the press tour for A Star is Born, Gaga blessed the world with some of the best sartorial moments in red carpet history, specifically, her Cannes 2018 moment in fluffy pink Valentino haute couture. From 92 to 18, the ages of our best dressed winners this year differ greatly but that shouldn't come as a surprise because as the late and great Yves Saint Laurent once noted, "Fashions fade, style is eternal." Scroll on to meet Vogue's best dressed of 2018. From left to right, Emily Blunt wears Yanina Couture, Dundas and Oscar de la Renta. A consistent performer on and off the red carpet, Emily Blunt's choices in 2018 ranged from the newly-launched Dundas by Peter Dundas to ethereal Yanina Couture, Delpozo, Khaite and Schiaparelli. Working with stylist Jessica Paster, Blunt didn't choose the usually red carpet names and it was a winning play by the new Mary Poppins who, no doubt, will continue to own the carpet in 2019. From left to right, Cate Blanchett wears Giorgio Armani Privé. Always polished and never a hair out of place, Cate Blanchett impressed all year donning only suits for the Ocean's 8 press tour and then putting the rest to shame in a streak of Armani Privé gowns at Cannes 2018. Blanchett's choice to recycle one of her more famous Armani Privé gowns, also helped the actress secure a spot on our list because who doesn't love a greener carpet? From left to right, Lady Gaga wears Alexander McQueen haute couture, Valentino haute couture and Givenchy haute couture. When Lady Gaga commits to a look, it's all or nothing for the singer-cum-actress. Whether it's pulling out vintage Alexander McQueen spring/summer 2013 from the archives or going full Hollywood glamour in Givenchy, Gaga makes the red carpet more interesting each and every time she steps on to one. Never afraid to have a moment or dive head first into fashion Gaga's red carpet reign is sure to continue as awards season heats up. From left to right, Zoë Kravitz wears Saint Laurent, Armani Privé and Saint Laurent. Choosing unexpected silhouettes and not one to shy away from showing a little skin, Zoë Kravitz makes the switch from Saint Laurent to vintage, couture to Gabriela Hearst like it's no big deal. Kravitz is a risk-taker and those risks always pay off—she was nominated as best dressed by several staffers in the Vogue office. From left to right, Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert wears floral print dress with Manolo Blahnik shoes; Saint Laurent vintage jacket, Le Kilt skirt and Prada shoes and Valentino gown. Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert's presence at fashion week is always a cause for celebration given the Italian never shies away from gowns during the day, accessories that make us weep with joy and lens-catching looks. But it was Battaglia Engelbert's pregnancy style that really gave her a little something extra in 2018. Watching her style her growing bump in babydoll dresses and Valentino gowns was a treat. From left to right, Donald Glover wears Dior Homme Suit, Gucci and Ermenegildo Zegna. The only man to make our list in 2018, Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino pulled out sharp suit after sharp suit making a case for double-breasted Dior Homme, '70s-inspired pastels and all-white everything for men. From left to right, Laura Harrier wears Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Proenza Schouler. New kid on the block, Laura Harrier is only just beginning but already her countless Louis Vuitton looks (the actor is a face of the brand) and deft work with the likes of Proenza Schouler, The Row, Paco Rabanne and Prabal Gurung mean the 28-year-old is already a force to be reckoned with. Watch this space. From left to right, Naomi Campbell wears Atelier Versace, Poiret and Calvin Klein. It's not just that we're lucky to see Naomi Campbell don gown after gown but the clothes too are blessed to be worn by the super because, let's be honest, everything looks superb on Campbell. With the ability to pull off any colour, silhouette and length, Campbell is a runway and red carpet legend and should always be treated as such. From left to right, Queen Elizabeth II wears Stewart Parvin. There is no colour Queen Elizabeth can't pull off, no hat she can't wrangle and no dress code she can't nail. Given our Monarch also chooses these colours so her adoring people can spot her from a mile away, you have to give The Queen props for her astute fashion choices. Oh, and let's not forget her ability to match, oh-so-perfectly, every hat, bag, pair of shoes, umbrella and broach to her look. From left to right, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wears Brandon Maxwell, Attico and Givenchy. While we're convinced Rosie Huntington-Whiteley could never look anything but perfect, her 2018 sartorial choices were impeccable. In silvery Givenchy, red Attico feathers or powder blue Oscar de la Renta, the model and mother proved she can do no wrong. From left to right, Tracee Ellis Ross wears Giambattista Valli, Valentino and Carolina Herrera. Don't worry, Tracee Ellis Ross didn't only wear pink in 2018 but her way with the colour certainly deserves a nod. From feather-trimmed Giambattista Valli to Carolina Herrera ruffles and shocking Valentino pink, Ellis Ross was a vision all year. From left to right, Ami and Aya Suzuki wear Gucci, Dior and Prada. Street style bait for sure, but what's not to love about Japanese twins Ami and Aya Suzuki's playful sense of fashion? From Gucci to Valentino, Prada to Dior the twins popped up everywhere this year and were impossible to miss in their designer gear, often wearing pieces no one else would dare to try and pull off. From left to right, Yara Shahidi wears Chanel, Gucci and Calvin Klein. Yara Shahidi might be the youngest on our list but her fashion résumé speaks volumes. No colour is too bold, no silhouette off-limits to the young actor, who proved she's as comfortable in Chanel couture as she is in '70s-inspired Gucci. From left to right, Penelope Cruz wears Chanel. For Penelope Cruz the year was all about Chanel—and we're not complaining. The actor proved there's no occasion one can't call on the Parisian house for fashion guidance, and don't the pair (Cruz and Chanel, that is) make the perfect couple? |
