Screw Taylor Swift... Go Into The Woods with Meryl Streep!

Oh gurl... now this pop obsessed music blogger could never write a proper film review, but after witnessing the epic, mesmerizing, gay-appropriate new Disney musical Into The Woods featuring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Johnny Depp last night, I have suddenly become moved to write about why EVERYONE needs to go see the best musical for all ages. It's mainly because of Meryl and her near perfect portrayal of The Witch... a part that was originally to be played by the legendary Cher! My apologies to the rest of the cast, but it's true.

From the humorous childhood tales of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella to the solid vocal performances from all the actors, Into The Woods is a fun, charming, good time at the theaters and should have no problem claiming the top spot of the national box office this week. The costumes are stunning, the sets transport the viewer to a far away kingdom, but it is the musical numbers that keep everyone entertained and in their seats.

From the opening, plot-revealing number to a GRAMMY worthy performance from Anna Kendrick aka the "Cups" actress from Pitch Perfect, the entire movie builds up to a brilliant climax and a performance of "The Last Midnight" from the great Meryl Streep. It is chilling, it is unexpectedly impressive (given Streep's last musical try in the dreadful Mamma Mia!) and instantly becomes the highlight of the new film.

SPOILER ALERT!: when all the fairytale characters come together in the dark woods to stop a giant who has climbed down a second beanstalk to avenge her murdered husband, Streep's frustration ultimately leads to her belting out the slightly depressing number, the last scene of the movie featuring The Witch. Sad.

"The Last Midnight" is a retelling of the events that led to the film's climax. The Baker wanted a son, Jack stole gold and wanted to get back his cow, while Cinderella wanted to live happily ever after with her prince. Everyone is to blame for the giant's unfortunate presence, but of course, The Witch is held responsible. "You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice, I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just right," she belts beautifully. We actually feel for Streep's character in the end.

Into The Woods was a fantastic movie, from beginning to end, no wonder it picked up a few deserved Golden Globe nominations, however, Streep easily steals the show. No surprise there really. "The Last Midnight" is just one of many great Streep moments in the new Disney production, but it stands out thanks to applaud-worthy vocals, attention-grabbing effects and the actress' ability to completely dive into any character she plays! YAAAAAAAAAS Meryl!
