Panic! At the Disco's "Hallelujah" - Single Review

Panic! At the Disco has lived a rather complicated life. After finding huge success in 2005 with their debut album, which featured "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", their biggest hit to date, the band hit some rough spots with an under-performing album and the departure of a few key members. In 2013, the group returned with their fourth album Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!, a solid effort which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200.

Now, without much notice, the band sends fans into a frenzy with "Hallelujah", the lead offering from an upcoming album set to be released under Decaydance and Fueled by Ramen this year. The song comes after the official announcement that former member Spencer Smith would not be returning to the band's line-up, leaving Brendon Urie and Dallon Weekes as the only two remaining.

"As I begin what feels like a new chapter of my life, I’m filled with immense excitement and a fresh sense of hope. I’ve seen this band through every phase, every change, every hardship. And yet my appreciation and love grows with every breath," Urie said in a letter leading up to the song's release. "Hallelujah" is a celebratory song to welcome the changes in life as Urie chants to let the positive feelings move through you.

The track opens up with strange yet intriguing sports film-sounding production before Urie's convincing vocals are heard. "All you sinners stand up sing hallelujah, show praise with your body stand up sing hallelujah," he sings on the uplifting chorus, one that pulls together the underlying message of the new song together quite nicely.

Urie has been open about his religious upbringing, and made headlines when he turned protests from the Westboro Baptist Church into an opportunity to raise money for a good cause, but it sounds like "Hallelujah" is not trying to make a strong religious statement at all. The rock/pop song is encouraging listeners to own up to their mistakes, their sins, and embrace them. We're listening and agreeing with his points!
